On the way from Seattle
No idea what the green stuff in the water is.
-
Pioneer Home in Sitka
This is the Pioneer home in Sitka. It's where Jeff's Great Uncle moved to after he could no longer live on his own. I'm not sure if Jeff asked if they have a friends and family discount for him when he gets older.
-
Yard in Sitka
Just some yard in Sitka.
-
Cruise Ship in Sitka
The cruise ships anchor in the harbor. According the the Dive Master we used, the harbor bottom is all chewed up. Talking with the locals they oppose putting in a deep water pier b/c they think that will increase the cruise ship traffic. Cruise ships will then use the pier(s) AND anchor in the harbor.
-
The Kayak Bus
This is the bus the kayak folks run their business out of. They move it around town. Raith has a friend in town, Paul, who used to live in this bus with his family in Salcha. Paul sold this bus to John, who owns the kayak company and they somehow got it from Salcha to Sitka.
-
Fishun' Boat
Just one of the hundreds of boats in the marinas around Sitka. This is an old wooden one, lots, and lots of these boats...many with a lot of age and wear on them. Definately work boats...not pretty boats.
-
More Fishun' Boats
Another view of the same marina. There were at least four marinas in town. This wasn't the largest.
-
One of the fish processing plants
An Aluminum fishing boat in front of one of the fish processing plants. We actually went to the right side of that pier a few minutes later to load ice onto Paul's boat (1 ton of ice, flat of herring and 3 Barqs rootbeers).
-
Sitka from the Harbor
In the harbor on Paul's boat, looking back at Sitka. The big building in the middle is our hotel. The Totem Square Inn. It's owned by natives.
-
Totem Square Inn
Another view from the water. That is the NOAA dock in the foreground. It's owned by the US Gov't (hence the people) but it's covered with all sorts of nasty "Go Away" signs.
-
Herring Pound
That's Paul in the corner. This is a floating platform that was going to be used as a Herring Pound but the guys who built it went out of business. Paul made bid to buy the thing...he wants to build a new float house on this structure.
-
Diving in Sitka
We went diving. Got Dry Suit certified. Water was 51 - 55 degrees. Not too bad in the dry suits. Visibility was pretty crappy. Tons of plankton (lots of neat small things to look at) so we couldn't see very far. Swam through kelp, saw scallops swimming (yes), cucumbers, gooey ducks (largest burrowing clam in the world and $10 a pound wholesale)...good experience. Diving is best in the winter there...bathtub clear without the plankton.
-
Raith in a suit
Yeah...he liked it. Ask him about it.
-
Sea Lion in Sitka
The city of Sitka has a floating platform in the harbor for cleaning fish. Has fresh water and everything. They don't want you cleaning fish on the shoreline. There are some sea lions who cruise around the cleaning platform looking for left overs.

Sitka Harbor at Dusk
Spent a lot of time trying to get this one (couple of hours). You should see the full sized, high res version.
-
Commerical Fishing Store Pier
In Sitka. Had Anemones on the pilings.
-
Death Barge IV
That's Burgess...he took us up to Greentop Harbor in his boat, the Death Barge IV. Good times.
-
On the Death Barge
Getting underway. This is before we started getting soaked and cold. Spent a lot of the trip in the cab sucking fuel fumes.
-
White Sisters
Stopped at a couple of rocky islands on the oceanside on the way up to Greentop. This is a popular hang out for Sea Lions. It was a quiet day...sometimes can be a 1,000 sea lions on these rocks.

We've arrived
Entering Greentop Harbor on the Death Barge.
-
Greentop
Raith enjoying the view on the ride into Greentop. Note the yaks and Raith's rubber commerical fishing gloves.
-
It's a Rainforest
It looked like this everywhere. Spongy with all the moss. Wet...wet...wet.
-
Jeff & the gulley
out hiking around behind the cabin.
-
Ride 'em cowboy
Sometimes you're away from home too long.
-
Shoreline? Why?
Yeah...why walk on the shoreline?
-
Fuzzy Raith paddling
Sorry, didn't get any better pics of him toodling about.

-
Kelp in Chickenshit Bay
Or, it could be alien parts....you never know.
-
Water
Duh!
-
Barnacles
They have 9 -10 foot tides there. Lots of stuff gets exposed at low tide. And barnacles are SHARP!
-
Slugs!
Man, they were HUGE...4 - 5 inches long. Greens, browns, greys...wicked.
-
Tourist picture
Look ma! We found a tree.
-
Raith of the woods
Just another day in the woods
-
Barn at night
This was the outbuilding at the Greentop Harbor cabin we stayed at. Kinda run down. Also had some funky roller thing we couldn't figure out the purpose for.
-
Greentop Cabin
Here's where we stayed.
-
The View
This was the view from the cabin window. I didn't get this photo very well. The light was awesome...I just didn't figure out how to shoot it.
-
Harbor Edge
The boats up for the night.

-
A stream
Paddled up the island to another bay and then hiked up this stream.

Jeff's first trout
Ever. Can you believe it? Dinky one...we put it back.
-
Sorry, I meant HUGE one
Yeah...pro fisherman's trick...hold the fish close to the camera.
-
Fall down go boom
Lens was fogged...so was Jeff's balance. Lost half his "lunch"...mostly the M&M's...he was very sad.
-
Ling and Bass
So, I caught a Black Bass in the Kelp, and upon retrieving it, I got hit again. Had some drag pulled and a good fight on my hands. When I finally retrieved the fish...this is what I found. A Ling Cod had attacked the Black Bass on my line (BTW - the Bass is about a 2.5 - 3 lber). That Ling would not let go...I poked it in the head, jiggled it, finally had to grab the fish to get it to let go. Big fun.
After that, I caught a kelp greenling and the same thing happened...this time it let go when I went to pull it out of the water. Could've been the same fish.
-
The reason we went
This is the cabin that Jeff's Great Uncle used to live in. It's still occupied. A couple of guys are partners in owning the cabin. One of them came up while we were there. Roman was his name. Super nice guy. Lives in Juneau and spends maybe a month a year at the cabin on and off.
